Never before in U.S. history had there been a military unit like the
Mormon Battalion. Their march across the U.S. was historic. What they
accomplished during and after their grueling 2000-mile trek to San Diego
was unprecedented and unrivaled. The impact of their service changed the
history of California and the U.S. At Council Bluffs, Iowa in June of
1846, U.S. Army Captain James Allen, representing President James Polk,
recruited into military service, 500 men and 38 women as laundresses.
They had been traveling west with their families to the Great Salt Lake
Valley under the leadership of President Brigham Young. Young and his
group were members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,
nick-named “Mormons.” Severe religious persecution had forced them to
relocate to the West. President Polk saw these able-bodied men as a
ready-made military unit which could reinforce the Army of the West in
California and a resource for building

CABO SAN LUCUS, MEXICO

-
AThe bay of Cabo San Lucas, at the southernmost tip of Baja, was once a
base for pirate vessels waiting to pounce on Spanish treasure ships.
Even fifteen years ago, it was little more than a fishing and canning
village occasionally visited by adventurous sports fishermen. Since
then, it has earned a reputation for the marlin that can be caught here,
and the bay is now full of sleek, radar-equipped fishing yachts.
Multi-million-dollar second homes occupy the best vantage points, palms
have been transplanted, golf courses have been laid, water has been
piped in from San José and everywhere is kept pristine. It's more like
an enclave of the US than part of Mexico
-
There is no better way to see Cabo and its majestic land formations than
from the sky. The rock formations of Land's End, the desert scenes and
the ocean breezes can all be better appreciated while soaring over 400
feet above land.
-
This par 72 Tom Weiskopf design course features ocean views from all 18
holes and incredible natural surroundings. The course varies in length
from 4,810 to 7,100 with undulating greens, challenging elevation

economy. Most visitors to Puntarenas will not want to leave without taking
home the delicious flavor of Costa Rican coffee. Puntarenas offers wonderful
arts-and-crafts shopping as well. Several craft stands are located ashore
near the pier. The walk along the waterfront is pleasant, but be prepared to
be approached by a variety of nonrecommended vendors selling local crafts
and private tours.
In
Sarchi, about one hour outside of San José, you will find many authentic
arts and crafts including wood figures, carved walking canes, toys, leather
goods, wall hangings and more. The villagers of Sarchi are famous for their

transport coffee and other products. In Sarchi, you can purchase miniature
replicas and the colorful cartwheels of these carts, which visitors take
home to use as decorative planters, bars or even as a living room or kitchen
accent.
PANAMA CANAL

The canal is both an engineering marvel and one of the most significant
waterways on earth. Stretching 50 miles from Panama City on the Pacific side
to Colón on the Atlantic side, it provides passage for over 12,000
ocean-going vessels per year. Seeing your ship nudge its way through the
narrow canal, with vast tracks of virgin jungle on both sides, is an
unforgettable sight. Sure, it may take only a day to cruise the canal but
the memory will last a lifetime.
The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss
While in Panama, be sure to pay a visit to the impressive Gatun Locks, where
you can watch ships and tankers being lifted up 85 feet to the level of Lake
Gatun. And bring your camera - you'll want to capture the amazing views that
surround this engineering marvel. Also, if you love a good fortress (and who
doesn't), you've got to check out Portobelo National Park. This charming
bayside village is home to 16th- and 17th-century Spanish forts, ruins and
treasure houses.
Sporting Adventures

opportunities to observe each in their natural habitat. If you're a bird
watcher, head to the village of Achiote, where you can attempt to name the
hundreds of species that have taken up residence there. Or if you're
somewhat of a fish yourself, Isla Grande is a popular spot for diving and
surfing. Its white-sand beaches and turquoise waters make it ideal for
sunbathing as well!
Shopping for Bargains
Two words: Duty Free. Colón is actually the largest duty-free zone in the
Americas, so whatever's on your shopping list - you're bound to find it
here! Be sure to check out The Colón Free Zone. It consists of 1,600
showrooms for wholesalers and retailers who travel here to purchase consumer
goods at cost, but you may find some showrooms that welcome tourists as
well. It's worth the trip just to take in the scene.
Get a Taste of Local Flavor
Although American, French and Spanish cuisine is easy to find around Colón,
you don't want to miss out on the hot and spicy local cooking. And remember,
you're in a prime spot for fresh seafood, so take advantage. Try a regional
specialty like Ceviche, a marinated fish dish. If seafood isn't your thing,
order the Empanadas, turnovers filled with meat or cheese.
COLON, PANAMA

As
the capital of Colón Province on Panama's central Caribbean coast, Colón
lies at the very heart of the country's rich history and innovation. This
important port town is less than an hour's drive from Panama's most
historical attractions, so it's easy to fit in visits to sites like the
Panama Railroad, Gatun Locks, and old Spanish fortress Fort San Lorenzo. And
of course, crystal blue waters and pure white sand are always a sweet
setting for a cruise vacation kick-off!
Portobelo will give you a glimpse into the rich history of the area once
known as the Paradise for Pirates. Experieince the regions rich history with
a visit to the Fort and its surroundings.
CARTAGENA, COLOMBIA

Cobbled streets, balconies with blooming bougainvillea, and pastel plazas
make Cartagena one of Latin America's most photogenic cities. But it's not
just another pretty seaport. Founded in 1533, this Spanish-Colonial city is
steeped in history. Its location made it a popular port for plunderers and
pirates. Today thrill-seekers will find a perfect mix of old and new with a
twist of island attitude.
The One Thing You Don't Want to Miss
You'll find signs of the city's pirating past on every corner. Castillo de
San Felipe de Barajas, the city's largest fortress, built to fend off
pillagers, is one of the most impressive and strongest ever created by the
Spaniards in their colonies.
Other Fun Things to Do
Sporting Adventures
Located between Panama and Venezuela, these warm waters are the perfect spot
for fishing fanatics. Don't miss the opportunity to cast for blue marlin.
Shopping For Bargains
Cartagena is still a great place to find jewels and other treasures! And Las
Bóvedas beckons. These old dungeons turned boutiques and souvenir shops are
well worth the trip.

Fusion fare is big throughout the city. You'll find quite a few options
featuring creative delicacies combining tastes from around the world plus
all the local favorites including plantains and coconut rice, and of course
coffee.

Fish is fresh and delicious in Florida. Grouper is probably the most popular
choice and is served almost any way imaginable. You'll find it fried,
