The Geo Database is a Deluxe Edition only feature. The Geo Database contains over 3 Million Locations from around the world and although it contains only current location information it is a great tool to help you in your research. Easy searching for any place including a Soundex Search in case you are not sure how a location is spelled. You can also find all cities within a specified distance of a selected city which will help with in your research for records that may exist in nearby locations.
You will have to download each of the files you want to use to your hard drive (Not to your A: drive). After you have downloaded any of the files you want to your hard drive you will need to import each one to the Geo Database. When you click the link to start the Download select the option to Save or Save As and specify the location to save the file. You will need to remember this location so you can find the file later and import it into the Geo Database.
We know these files are fairly large and that there are several steps to downloaded and imported into the Geo Database. The Geo Database file is also available on the Legacy installation CD. Click Here if you want the quick and easy steps to copy the Geo Database from your CD to your hard drive. Remember you can always order a CD to be mailed to you for a very small cost. See our Online Store.
Here is an abbreviated guide to follow if you choose to download:
- Create the location database file
Open Legacy, then click Options > Customize and choose the Other tab. Next click the Database Maintenance button to open the Geo Location Database - Setup window and then create an empty database file by clicking Create. Navigate to the the drive and folder where you want to create the database (normally Geo off your Legacy folder).
- Download the six regions of information
There are six different regional location files that you can add to your Geo Location Database. You do not have to download all six. You can return at any time to download files you have skipped. A description of these files is listed below these five steps. Remember where you save the regional files on your computer when you download. Some of these files are quite large and people with dialup connections may get disconnected before a download is complete. (If any of these files become corrupted during the download process, you must delete them and start over.)
- Import the regions into the database
After you have downloaded all of the regional location files that you want to use, click the Import button and navigate to the drive and folder where you saved the downloaded files. Select one to import by clicking on it and then clicking the Open button. Repeat this with each of the regional files you downloaded.
- Compress the database
To compress the file, click Compress. The process can take a while so be patient...
- Set the Path or Move the Geo Location Database
Before you can use the Geo Location Database, you must first tell Legacy where it is located by clicking Set and then indicate the path to the database.
If you have questions or problems when performing these steps, click on Help or press F1 for Legacy's Help files.
Click a region to start the Download.
