LEGACY UPDATE 1 JANUARY 2004 NOW AVAILABLE
There is a new Legacy 5.0 update available (build date
1 January 2004). You
can update your Legacy program by clicking on Internet > Check for Legacy
Update.... and following the prompts. Updates are free patches and
enhancements that repair bugs, replace damaged/missing files, and bring your
program up to date. Updating will keep your program in "good health" and make
sure that all of Legacy's many features will work at their best.
This update is for both the Standard and Deluxe editions of Legacy 5.0. The
updates are always cumulative, which means if you missed the last two or
three, the current build will catch up you on all the enhancements and
corrections of the past.

The update process has been streamlined for
Legacy 5.0 Deluxe users: They won't need to enter their e-mail address or use
a password when updating their program. If you are not a registered user, you
can get the free update by clicking on the blue www.LegacyFamilyTree.com link
in the screen. Be sure to enter your e-mail address correctly, so that you
will receive the installation password, and read the screens carefully.
You can see the history of changes by clicking on the blue
See What's New link.
The Check For Update screen will show you the build date of your program,
which should be 1 January 2004.
You can also check for the build date by clicking on Help > General
Information and checking the build date in the middle of the second line of
the General Information window. The free update is also available by visiting
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp.
Note: This update will not update (patch) Legacy 2.0 or 3.0 or 4.0. If you are using an
earlier version, please upgrade your program to Legacy 5.0.

POCKET GENEALOGIST VERSION 2.60 NOW AVAILABLE
|
 |
| Device Not Included |
Pocket Genealogist Version 2.60 is now available. There are a
lot of new features in this release. This version has changes to the database
so before you install this version, synchronize any data you have on the
device and do a GEDCOM export. Databases prior to this release cannot be used
after installation. (You can delete the old databases from the program after
installation)
Pocket Genealogist -- produced by Northern Hills Software -- is genealogy
software for the PocketPC, Palm-Size PC, Handheld PC, Pocket PC 2003 and
Handheld Pro (Windows CE devices V2.11 or newer).
Registered users can find the FREE downloads at:
www.pocketgenealogist.com/download.htm
If you are not a Pocket Genealogist user and want more details or wish to
order, visit please
www.legacyfamilytree.com/Redirect/Store-AddOns.asp
New Features:
Support for Legacy Family Tree V5.
Added "Orphaned" database processing. On the Pocket Genealogist desktop sync
screen, you can press the "Orphans" button to retrieve a list of databases on
the device that no longer exist on the desktop. You can then synchronize the
database back to the desktop. This is handy when you have a system failure on
your desktop or delete your Pocket Genealogist database by mistake. Databases
created prior to this version (2.60) are not eligible for retrieval.
Added "Find by Todo Task" so that all To Do's can be viewed on the device
from one screen. (On the Tools menu)
Added an "Open Log" iconic button to the main desktop Pocket Genealogist
screen providing easy access to the Pocket Genealogist logs.
The Pocket Genealogist desktop "About" screen now has buttons for sending
emails to Northern Hills Software or navigating to the main Pocket Genealogist
webpage or the documents (User Guide) webpage.
"Native" support for Windows Mobile 2003 devices. (Pocket PC 2003)
Updated Features:
The "GEDCOM Profiles" have been changed to add finer control over the
supported fields for specific events. (Date, Location, Temple, Cause, Status,
Age, Agency, Memo) The Direct imports (Legacy, TMG GenBridge, PAF GenBridge)
now use these profiles which provide better GEDCOM exporting. Additionally the
Language Packs have been changed to provide translations for the direct
imports.
You now can "edit/view" individuals directly from the "Find by Name" list.
After you "edit/view", you are returned to the list. (MAJOR time savings when
you have multiple individuals with the same name as you don't have to re-do
the find after viewing an individual)
Database, Language Packs, the sync process, and the Import "Customize"
screen is now all controlled by a version number. This allows proper
management of these items with future releases of Pocket Genealogist.
Language Packs have been enhanced to support translations of "labels"
(Events for example) for Direct imports. "List" items such as Child Status,
Witness Labels, Parent Relationships, etc. are now translated.
Support for "Cause of Death" source citations. (Legacy Family tree imports)
List of events on Event "tab" (individual and family) now displays either
the location, temple or comment in the 3rd column of the list. (Whichever is
available) This is especially useful for events with no locations but with a
comment.
Better support of LDS Temples.
Child Status and Relationship to Parents can now be accessed from the "Edit
Children" screen. (use the push button next to the display field to "Toggle"
between the types)
"Relationship" now contains additional information about each entry in the
list (Relationship to Parents, Marriage date, etc.)
Dropped support for Direct import with Legacy Version 3.
Added better support for GEDCOM's created with the ANSEL character set.
Bug Fixes:
Support for Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7.1
Fixed problem with HP/C version of 2.53. ("File", "Open" did not work in
that release)
"Unlocking" of databases from the "Properties" screen on the device now
correctly sets the "enablement" of menu items. (Prior to this fix, you had to
close/open the database in order to access some of the menu items)
The 2.60 User Guide for Pocket Genealogist is available (74 pages). You can
download it in both Acrobat and Word formats by visiting:
www.pocketgenealogist.com/documents.htm

Massive McClung Collection Now Housed in
State-of-the-Art Facility
The
Knoxville [Tennessee] News Sentinel has reported that the Calvin M.
McClung Historical Collection, recognized nationwide as an outstanding
genealogical and history library -- closed all of December -- reopened on
January 5. The state-of-the-art facility houses thousands of volumes and
manuscripts, many of them rare, are in climate-controlled storage in the
addition that adds 56,000 square feet to the old Custom House and History
Center. In addition, McClung has moved to the third floor of the new addition
bordering Gay Street and Clinch Avenue in Knoxville.
The McClung Historical Collection, which is part of the Knox County
Public Library System, has also added two new online resources and
databases that will require patrons to use their library card. Heritage
Quest, a comprehensive genealogy database, and the Tennessee Sanborn
Fire Insurance Maps from 1867-1970, have been put online and are listed on
the library's Web site under research databases.

Maryland State Archives Census Indexes Available
Online
The
state of Maryland has four different census searchable from their State Archives
Web site:
1776 (Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Caroline, Dorchester, Frederick, Harford,
Prince George's, Queen Anne, and Talbot Counties)
1778 (Caroline, Charles, and Queen Anne's Counties)
1870 (Allegany, Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Caroline, Carroll, Cecil,
Charles, Dorchester, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Kent, Montgomery, Prince
George's, Queen Anne's, St. Mary's, Somerset, Talbot, Washington, Wicomico, and
Worcester Counties and Baltimore City)
1880 (Anne Arundel County only).
The search engine can be found at
www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/refserv/html/censussearch.html. Users may
search by date, first name, last name, and county. A last name search for
'Hudson' found 159 records, with record listings including name, date, age,
gender, race, birth date, county, and locality. Also included is the location of
the original census; however, no census images are included with this
information.

The
War Times Portal is a subject index providing links about wars and
conflicts. It's available at
http://www.wtj.com/portal/.
Categories on the front page include Wars & Periods, Fighting Forces, and
Museums & Battlefields. There are subcategories here too. Click on a
category and you'll get an annotated list of sites, subcategories at the
top. Unfortunately the listings are centered -- they'd be a bit easier to
read if they were justified left. Some sites are marked with red
exclamations. The more points the more the editors like that particular
site.
The link list is part of the War Times Journal at
http://www.wtj.com, which contains
additional information including archives (correspondence from Napoleon and
dispatches from Wellington) articles, and collections of information on the
Napoleonic wars, the Civil War, WWI, and WWII.

TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS
-
If Your Ancestor Was Born Before 1913...
... in a place such as Mink Creek, Franklin County, Idaho
-- you may never find record of his birth! Even though on today's map, Mink
Creek is in Franklin County, this county did not exist prior to 1913. From
1864-1913 it was in Oneida County. The genealogy principle here is to record
the place as it existed at the time of the event.
Chances for success are greater if you are searching for 1) the right name, 2)
in the right locality, 3) for the right time period. It is not always possible
to have quick access to an historical gazetteer, map, or a local history.
Fortunately, two software programs contain tools to assist:
AniMap
AniMap
is one such computer program. It includes over 2,300 maps and shows the
changing county boundaries for each of the 48 adjacent United States for every
year since colonial times. AniMap will plot the desired city on the map. If
you selected the year 1911 for Idaho, it would show that Mink Creek is in
Oneida County not Franklin! In 1863 it was in Owyhee County.
Knowing the historical boundary changes will help the researcher learn what
other counties may have been a part of the ancestral county. Perhaps some of
the family records are actually in Owyhee County.
AniMap will measure the distance between two localities. It also has a
series of "overlay" maps where the railroads, rivers, and townships can be
displayed. It's also great for producing maps of the family's migration.
Most experienced United States researchers will say that they cannot live
without this program. To learn more, or to purchase AniMap, please visit:
http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Redirect/Store-SoftwareEtc.asp
Database of Historical Counties (US
County Verifier)
Imagine this -- you entered a birth place in your genealogy computer program.
The ancestor was born in 1860. A message appeared saying "Swift County did not
exist in 1860 in the state of Minnesota. It was not founded until 1870."

These kind of messages now appear in the newly-released
version of Legacy Family Tree. The program now contains an historical database
of U.S. counties. As localities are entered, messages will appear if the
locality was misspelled, didn't exist at the time, or even if it never existed
in that state.
The US County Verifier is a feature of Legacy 5.0 Deluxe only. It is
not available in the standard edition. To order Legacy Family Tree 5.0 Deluxe

HUMOR
Dear Tech
Support,
Last year I
upgraded from Boyfriend 5.0 to Husband 1.0 and noticed a distinct slow down in
overall system performance - particularly in the flower and jewelry
applications, which operated flawlessly under Boyfriend 5.0.
In addition,
Husband 1.0 uninstalled many other valuable programs, such as Romance 9.5 and
Personal Attention 6.5, and then installed undesirable programs such as NFL
5.0, NBA 3.0. and Golf Clubs 4.1. Conversation 8.0 no longer runs, and
Housecleaning 2.6 simply crashes the system. I've tried running Nagging 5.3 to
fix these problems, but to no avail.
What can I do?
Signed,
Desperate
=========================
Dear Desperate:
First keep in
mind, Boyfriend 5.0 is an Entertainment Package, while Husband 1.0 is an
Operating System!
Please enter the
command: "http: I Thought You Loved Me.htm" and try to download Tears 6.2 and
don't forget to install the Guilt 3.0 update.
If that
application works as designed, Husband 1.0 should then automatically run the
applications Jewelry 2.0 and Flowers 3.5. But remember, over use of the above
application can cause Husband 1.0 to default to Grumpy Silence 2.5, Happy Hour
7.0, or Beer 6.1. Beer 6.1 is a very bad program that will download the
Snoring Loudly Beta.
Whatever you do,
DO NOT install Mother-in-law 1.0 (it runs a virus in the background, that will
eventually seize control of all your system resources). Also, do not attempt
to reinstall the Boyfriend 5.0 program. These are unsupported applications and
will crash Husband 1.0.
In summary,
Husband 1.0 is a great program, but it does have limited memory and cannot
learn new applications quickly. You might consider buying additional
software to improve memory and performance. We recommend Hot Food 3.0 and
Lingerie 7.7.
Good Luck,
Tech Support
