GENViewer for Legacy is a remarkable add-on program that works directly with your Legacy family file or with GEDCOM files created by other genealogy applications. With GENViewer's powerful File Search capabilities, you can simultaneously search multiple files for individuals or find that critical piece of information you need.

Simply select your search criteria and click Find. GENViewer will look for the information in every Legacy family file, PAF or GEDCOM on your hard drive or data folder! No more examining files one a time! This labor-saving feature is enough to make GENViewer a great value at only US $19.95; but hold on -- there's more!

Use GENViewer to quickly examine and clean up all of those GEDCOM files that are cluttering your computer. Its speed and versatility makes it ideal for previewing GEDCOM files before taking the time and effort of importing them into Legacy.

Because GENViewer uses existing Legacy files and GEDCOMs, it doesn't create extra files that fill up your hard drive. This is a great space-saving feature. Furthermore, GENViewer is a read only application: it doesn't change or modify any files so users don't have to worry about changing any information.

GENViewer's intuitive, easy-to-use interfaces provide nine different views of your genealogy information:
General, Individual, Family, Pedigree, Descendants, List, Highlighted, Islands, and Sources. Your information is just one click away.

Most views of your data can be copied to the clipboard with just a click of the mouse. You can then paste the family information right into an e-mail message, word processing document or another application! Reports can also be created in HTML and PDF format!

GENViewer is an incredible tool for analyzing your family information. Use GENViewer's
highlighting tool to make information stand out in each of the views of your data. There are about 100 easy-to-use highlighting options. It's amazing what you can see using this highlighting tool.

And there's still more! You can also use GENViewer's
Internet search to find information about your family on the Web. GENViewer's searches are a perfect compliment to the Internet searches done by Legacy. Why buy expensive CD's when much of that information is already available free at regularly updated Web sites? (No more gimmicky, out-of-date CD's!) When you find a Web page with information just right click on it and select Print from the popup menu!

GENViewer can create a self-viewing executable from a GEDCOM file that will display your genealogical information when run. This file can be e-mailed as an attachment or placed on a Web site for downloading. Furthermore the special file can be created on a floppy disk and run on any Windows computer. The special file will not expire and can be viewed as many times as wanted. This special version of GENViewer is NOT installed on the viewing computer. No information is left on the computer when finished viewing the information. This is a truly unique and efficient way to share your genealogy with people who don't own a genealogy program but who have a computer.

GENViewer for Legacy features include:

· File Search lets users search multiple files with one search.
· Advanced Find allows users to type search text and then search the family file.
· Sort names, ages, places, etc. by column with the click of a button
· Calculate age based on Christening and/or Burial dates option.
· Children/Sibling lists are sorted by birth date.
· Find 'Islands" (separate trees).
· Popup information for Family and Pedigree Tabs.
· Support for Legacy, PAF and GEDCOM files.
· Create reports in HTML or PDF formats!
· Self-Viewing GEDCOM feature allows you to create an executable consisting of GENViewer and your GEDCOM file. This executable can then be sent to family members or other genealogy researchers.
· Print out genealogy reports.
· Highlight individuals easily with about 100 options.
· Find individuals who are missing LDS ordinances as well as individuals who are TempleReady.
· Create a self-viewing executable from a GEDCOM file that will display your genealogical information.

System Requirements:

· Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000 - GENViewer is a 32-bit program.
· 5 MB of hard drive space is required for the application and data files. More free space is required while viewing genealogy files. The size of free space requires depends on the size of the genealogy file. No files are left on your computer after exiting GENViewer.
· For Internet searching, Internet Explorer 4.01 or greater must be installed on your computer.

GENViewer for Legacy is a product of MudCreek Software. You may use GENViewer on a free 15-day trial basis, after which you must purchase the program to continue using it. Product support and free program updates are available to paid/registered users. Click here to download GENViewer or its update files.

There is a new Legacy 5.0 update available (build date 11 May 2004). You can update your Legacy program by clicking on Internet > Check for Legacy Update.... and following the prompts. Updates are free patches and enhancements that repair bugs, replace damaged/missing files, and bring your program up to date. Updating will keep your program in "good health" and make sure that all of Legacy's many features will work at their best.

This update is for both the Standard and Deluxe editions of Legacy 5.0. The updates are always cumulative, which means if you missed the last two or three, the current build will catch up you on all the enhancements and corrections of the past.

The update process has been streamlined for Legacy 5.0 Deluxe users: They won't need to enter their e-mail address or use a password when updating their program. If you are not a registered user, you can get the free update by clicking on the blue www.LegacyFamilyTree.com link in the screen. Be sure to enter your e-mail address correctly, so that you will receive the installation password, and please read the screens carefully.

This newest Update will allow users to directly import PAF 5.0 files. All data is brought in! You can see the other enhancements, corrections and changes to Legacy by clicking on the blue See What's New link.

The Check For Update screen will show you the build date of your program, which should be 11 May 2004.

You can also check for the build date by clicking on Help > General Information and checking the build date in the middle of the second line of the General Information window. The free update is also available by visiting www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp.

Note: This update will not update (patch) Legacy 2.0 or 3.0 or 4.0. This update will overwrite earlier versions with Legacy 5.0 Standard Edition. If you are using the Deluxe Edition of Legacy 3.0 or 4.0, you will need to buy the Legacy 5.0 Deluxe upgrade if you wish to continue using your deluxe features. Special upgrade prices for Legacy 4.0 Deluxe users are available by visiting: www.legacyfamilytree.com/DeluxeUpgrade.asp

  • Project Will Preserve Newspapers in Pennsylvania

Reporter James G. Beidler writes in the Lebanon [Penn.] Daily News: Newspapers often are called the "rough draft of history," but for genealogists that rough draft -- especially in the 19th century -- included slice-of-life details about specific ancestors that are available from no other source.

Almost every genealogist has a "things found on the way to something else" story relating to newspaper research.

In my case, I was looking for the obituary of one Berks County ancestor in the 1886 editions of the Reading Eagle when I came across this item in the March 24 edition:

"Mount Pleasant -- W. Machmer moved to Mr. Becker's in Bern township."

It was a seemingly insignificant sentence, but to me, it was special because "W. Machmer" was Wellington Bickel Machmer, one of my great-great-grandfathers. My mother had remembered one of Wellington's sons telling her that the family had once lived at "Becker's Spring House," but she never knew how that residence fit into the family's chronology.

    Now we do.

More researchers than ever will be able to benefit from this type of information in historic 19th and 20th century newspapers because of a $350,000 National Endowment for the Humanities grant awarded to the Preservation Department of the Penn State University Libraries.

The two-year grant will be used to conduct the second phase of the Pennsylvania Newspaper Project or PaNP, which aims to preserve to microfilm a variety of historic newspapers from around the commonwealth.

When completed, Pennsylvania residents will be able to access and borrow film from their local public libraries through the State Library of Pennsylvania via Interlibrary Loan.
