  • Legacy Update 5 September 2004 Now Available

There is a new Legacy 5.0 update available (Version - Build Date of 5 September 2004). You can update your Legacy program by clicking on Internet > Check for Legacy Update... and following the prompts. Updates are free patches and enhancements that add new features, repair bugs, replace damaged/missing files, and bring your program up to date. Updating will keep your program in "good health" and make sure that all of Legacy's many features will work at their best.

This update is for both the Standard and Deluxe editions of Legacy 5.0. The updates are always cumulative, which means if you missed the last two or three, the current build will catch up you on all the enhancements and corrections of the past.

The update process has been streamlined for Legacy 5.0 Deluxe users: You won't need to enter your e-mail address or use a password when updating your program. If you are not a registered user, you can get the free update by clicking on the blue www.LegacyFamilyTree.com link in the screen. Be sure to enter your e-mail address correctly, so that you will receive the installation password, and please read the screens carefully.

You can view the enhancements, corrections and changes to Legacy by clicking on the blue See What's New link.

The Check For Update screen will show you the build date of your program, which should be 5 September 2004.

You can also check for the build date by clicking on Help > General Information and checking the build date in the middle of the second line of the General Information window. The free update is also available by visiting www.legacyfamilytree.com/DownloadUpdate.asp.

Note: This update will not update (patch) Legacy 2.0 or 3.0 or 4.0. This update will overwrite earlier versions with Legacy 5.0 Standard Edition. If you are using the Deluxe Edition of Legacy 3.0 or 4.0, you will need to buy the Legacy 5.0 Deluxe upgrade if you wish to continue using your deluxe features. Special upgrade prices for Legacy 4.0 Deluxe users are available by visiting: www.legacyfamilytree.com/DeluxeUpgrade.asp

Other changes with 2.90 include:

• Ability to view To Do's associated with a Repository from the "Master List" (when viewing a Repository) for Legacy imports.

Your research trip routines are about to change. No more lugging your laptop around, chaining it to table legs and hoping it (and the table) will be there when you return from getting a book or searching through a roll of microfilm. Your data is in your pocket and ready for viewing, editing, and additions at any time. When you get back home, just load the changes back into your Legacy family file on your desktop computer, and smile....

  • 'Toggle Display of 4/5 Generations' and Other Right-Click Menus

Right-click menus, also known as shortcut menus or context menus, provide a quick way to select from the available options for a particular task. These floating menus are displayed over a form, independent of any menu or toolbar. The options displayed on the menu depend on where the mouse pointer was when the right mouse button was clicked. Right-click menus are a powerful way to access the many features of Legacy. Here are some examples of right-click menus:

On the Family View:

• While on the Family View, right-click on the background between the boxes. A shortcut menu appears with options to Change Background Color/Pattern, Change Family File for this Fam/Ped View, Open Another Family/Pedigree View, and Close this Family/Pedigree View. While on the Pedigree View the menu contains the above plus Toggle Display of 4/5 Generations and Zoom Lists

• Right-click on the large rectangle in the Husband box on the Family View. The menu contains Edit (name), Edit Marriage, Add, View, Notes, Pictures, Tag, Delete, and Unlink. All these options are available from one place. You don't have to go searching through all the menus on the menu bar or help screens trying to figure out how to do something.

• Right-click on a child name in the child list. The shortcut menu contains Edit (name), Add Brother, Add Sister, Notes, Pictures, Tag, Set to Preferred Child, Children's Settings, Delete, View and Unlink from Parents.

• Right-click in a Notes field or on highlight text. The shortcut menu contains Undo, Cut, Copy Paste and Delete. (These shortcuts are not available if there is no menu bar where you can click on Edit.)

Many windows have right-click menus (for instance the Picture Gallery). If in doubt, try right-clicking on something! Right-click menus will help you save time and make working in Legacy much easier and more efficient.

  • Advanced Sourcing in Legacy Deluxe

When doing genealogy work, you should keep track of each piece of information you collect and also where you found it. Your records should be detailed enough so that any other person in the future could find the same information and possibly expand on it. In addition, each source you cite should be personally examined and verified by you. Beware of citing someone else's sources: They could be wrong!

As you add individuals and families to the Family File, you can either document the sources of the information as you go or you can return later and add the documentation. Of course, by putting things off you tend to forget about them, so it is strongly suggested that you resist the urge to save time and go ahead with documenting your sources as you initially enter the names.

The new Advanced Sourcing features in Legacy Deluxe let you assign sources to a group of individuals or marriages at one time. You can select the fields you want the sources to be applied to. This is an easy way to go back and document groups of records that came from the same source.

To start Advanced Sourcing, click Tools on the menu bar and select Advanced Sourcing from the menu. (Advanced Sourcing is also available from the Name List by clicking Options and select it from the menu.) The Advanced Source Citation window will open. To assign sources using the citation currently on the Source Clipboard first click the Source Clipboard button on the right side of the window.
The Source Clipboard holds the references of up to five sources in the Master Source List. You can set or change the master source citations by clicking the Set button on each of the five tabs. The clipboard also holds the detailed information about where in each source the current information is coming from. (You can also set the Surety Level for each source of information.)

When you have entered the current source information, click OK to return to the entry form. You can place up to five source citations on the Source Clipboard at once. When you have it set up the way you want you can also save up to ten different variations. Additional Source Clipboard information is available by clicking on Help. When finished, click OK and you will return to the Advanced Source Citation window.

More information on Advanced Sourcing in Legacy Deluxe is available at: www.legacyfamilytree.com/tipsAdvancedSourcing.asp

In addition, Legacy's Ultimate Guide to Sources Training CD (US $9.95) shows you the value of effectively entering sources in Legacy.

Recommended for beginners to advanced, this CD teaches you how to:

· Add a New Source
· Add a Source Detail
· Cite a Master Source
· Effectively Use the Source Clipboard
· Correctly Use the Master Source List
· Use Online Library Catalogs
· How to Analyze a Source

To order Legacy 5.0 Deluxe or the Ultimate Guide to Sources Training CD, please Click Here or phone (623) 444-8918 (toll-free within the US (800) 753-3453).

"The wife of Amos Smith could not be found. Someone suggested to me that she might have been stillborn. What do you think?"

"Please run down the Wheelers and I will send three more dollars."
