  • Legacy Genealogy Cruise 2004

This year's, Legacy Genealogy Cruise was a huge success.  Our shore excursions were a lot of fun.  Many went snorkeling or hung out on the beach or visited the shops.

We also had three days of Legacy classes and everyone there whether new to Legacy or very experienced all learned new things.

Our group had so much fun that I didn't want to come home.  We had so much fun.  It was a memory of a lifetime, one I'll never forget and will always treasure.

Read all about it in our Cruise Logs and check out the fun pictures we took --  Please click here!

TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS

  • Mark As "Not Duplicates" During Merge Session

There always seems to be some pairs of individuals in your family file that have similar names and vital information. When merging duplicates these pairs are displayed every time. You know they are different people and just wish they could be marked as such and left out of the merge process. For example, it was common in the past for families to have two children with the same name, born within a year or two of each other but the first had died in infancy. You don't want to accidentally merge them.

In Legacy 5.0 Deluxe Edition the option to "Mark this pair as ‘Not Duplicates'" lets you specify the currently displayed persons as not being duplicates. After doing so they will not be displayed in the future when you are merging duplicates. (The feature is NOT available in the Standard Edition.) Simply click the Ø button and they are marked. Alt-X is also available as a shortcut key for this feature.

The ‘Not Duplicates’ List: This shows the list of people currently marked as not being duplicates. The pairs of people in this list are not considered the same when searching for duplicates to merge together. You can:

    • Close this screen by clicking the Close button.
    • Remove a pair of individuals by highlighting the desired line and clicking the Remove button.
    • Change the font size of the list by clicking the Zoom button. (You can remove pairs from the Not Duplicates list whenever you want.)
    • The Individuals Marked as Not Duplicates screen is reached from the Merge screen by clicking the Options button and choosing Display the ‘Not Duplicates’ List button.

The Mark As "Not Duplicates" feature is only available in Legacy Family Tree Deluxe Edition.  To order Legacy 5.0 Deluxe, please Click Here or phone (623) 444-8918 (toll-free within the US at (800) 753-3453).

  • Excluding Records From A Potential Problems Report

A Potential Problems Report searches through your Family File and checks the information it contains for some common and sometimes unnoticed discrepancies. After checking on the results, you may find that the warnings for a particular individual are unfounded and that the information is correct. (Yes, Aunt Mabel really did have a child when she was 48 years old!)

To mark an individual so that he or she is excluded from future Potential Problems Reports, edit the individual in his/her Information screen and click on the Exclude from Potential Problems Report button the bottom of the screen.  To exclude a particular problem from being checked in a Potential Problems report, select it from the list of 21 items for possible exclusion. All the unchecked possible problems will still be checked in the future.

The Potential Problems Report is reached by clicking the Report button on the Button Bar, then selecting the Books/Other tab in the Report Selection screen and clicking the Potential Problems button. To skip individuals marked for exclusion when doing subsequent Potential Problems Reports, click the Records tab and select All Records not marked to Exclude.

OUR FAVORITE WEB SITES

  • Kansas State Historical Society Online

Explore your family history using census, newspapers, vital records, and other genealogy resources from the Kansas State Historical Society web site research collections.  There is information on how to get started on genealogy/family history, plus a Search engine for biographical sources on your Kansas ancestor in the Kansas Biographical Name Index.

Most helpful is the link to counties, where Kansas researchers can discover "the where and what" of their ancestors community.

  • CensusTools: Spreadsheets as Census Forms

This Web site offers 39 downloadable spreadsheets covering the U.S., Canada, England, Ireland and Scotland! Among the U.S. collection are spreadsheets for all federal records as well as the states of Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Wisconsin.

Microsoft Excel 97 was used to create the spreadsheets and they should be compatible with most any recent full-featured spreadsheet program available.  Although the census spreadsheets can be downloaded free, the creator, Gary Minder, asks for a small $10.00 donation if you find them useful in any way.
