Backup Data Files screenSelecting a Location and Name for your Data Backup
Windows Vista • Windows XP or earlier
Windows Vista
It's important that you backup your data files on a drive other than your C: drive because any backups on your C: drive will be lost along with your original data files when your C: drive goes bad. Your only option then may be to manually re-enter all of your genealogy. 1. To change your data backup location to another drive in Windows Vista click the Computer link in the Navigation Pane on the left side of the screen. (If you don't see Computer, then click on More or Browse and then click on Computer).
2. Select the drive where the data backup is to be made. Make sure you have a CD in the CD drive or a memory stick* plugged into the USB port if backing up on one of these removable drives. Make sure this location shows at the top of the screen.
(For example, ► Computer ► DVD RW (D:) <date>. Please Note: Your computer screen may appear different.)3. Give your data backup file a name in the File Name field and then click Save.
4. For help with this screen, mouse over an item for the screen tip or select an item and then press F1 on your keyboard.
* Memory sticks are good for short-term uses like transferring files from one computer to another but are not recommended for long-term storage.
