Running Legacy on Mac OS X or Linux

Yes, you can run Legacy on a Mac. Tools like Crossover, VMWare and Parallels make this possible. Here is a page to get your started.

Legacy and Windows 8, Windows 7 and Vista

Installing Legacy 7.5 and earlier

The easiest things to remember when installing Legacy on Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista are:

1. Don't install from Legacy 6.0 or earlier CDs as they are not fully compatible. Click here if you already installed version 6 or earlier.

2. Install Legacy from the Web. This version is fully compatible with Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista and has the latest enhancements and patches.

3. When installing Legacy, don't make any changes to the setup. Just keep clicking Next.

4. Install Legacy only to the default C:\Legacy folder on your hard drive; if you don't some features will not run correctly or will have errors.

5. For Windows 8 and Windows 7, the User Account Control (UAC) must be set to "Never Notify"; otherwise you may have trouble unlocking the Deluxe features with your customer number and experience other problems in the program.

(1) Please open the Control Panel, and click on the User Accounts icon.
(2) Next click on Change User Account Control settings.
(3) Move the slider bar to the bottom, Never Notify; then click OK to reboot your computer.

6. For Windows Vista, make sure the User Account Control (UAC) feature is enabled; otherwise you may get run-time error 339 and experience other problems in the program.

(1) Open the Control Panel and click on the User Accounts icon.
(2) Click on the link for Turn User Account Control (UAC) on or off. (You need to give Windows permission to continue).
(3) Check mark the box, then click OK, and reboot your computer. Legacy should run properly now.

7. If you have no problems installing and Legacy is running OK, you can stop here; otherwise contact Support by sending a message to Support@LegacyFamilyTree.com.

Legacy 6.0

• If you’re experiencing problems running Legacy 6.0 under Windows Vista or higher, you must update to the final build by going to http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/helpDownloadVersion6.asp to download the compatible Legacy 6.0 file.  Legacy v6.0.0.127 released in March 2007 fixed three major problems: 1. Inability to update from within the program, 2. Help file format not supported by Vista, 3. various errors when creating reports or doing File Maintenance.

• For Legacy Family Tree 6.0 to run properly under Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista, only install the Legacy program to the default C:\Legacy folder, rather than changing it to "C:\Program Files\Legacy".  If you install Legacy to the Program Files directory, you will discover that Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista do not allow users to write files to that location.  Instead, Windows 8, Windows 7 and Windows Vista redirect any changes to Legacy files to a Virtual Store folder, a location in the user’s profile.  This creates serious problems, for example, if more than one user (people with different user accounts) attempt to work in the same family file.

• After updating, if you continue to receive errors or have problems, please contact Support by sending a message to Support@LegacyFamilyTree.com or by telephoning (425) 788-0932.

Legacy 5.0 or Earlier

• For Legacy Family Tree 5.0 or earlier to run under Windows 7 and Windows Vista, only install the Legacy program to the default C:\Legacy folder, rather than changing it to "C:\Program Files\Legacy".

• Using Different User Accounts:  If people are using Legacy 5.0 or earlier in different user accounts, when you go into Legacy after switching accounts, you'll need click Options and select Customize > Locations.  Next click on the Reset button next to the "Location of temporary files" field before creating reports, or doing a Check/Repair, etc.  If you installed in Admin account and are using Legacy strictly under the user account, go there and click on the Reset button to set the path to the correct Temp folder

• Help File:  The Help files are not being updated in Legacy 5.0 or earlier.  If you are using one of these earlier programs, you must download the WinHlp32.exe file from Microsoft. Once the WinHlp32.exe patch is downloaded/installed you will able to access the Help files in Legacy as well as other programs that are not yet updated or that are not going to be updated.

Please go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917607/en-us where you'll find information about this problem and links to download the WinHlp32.exe file.  There are two options to download:

Windows6.0-KB917607-x86.msu For 32-bit Vista (most people users will use this download)
Windows6.0-KB917607-x64.msu For 64-bit Vista
