Share Legacy Family Tree and Your Family File on a CD

by Ken McGinnis

The Legacy setup program has a cool feature that will allow users to copy their family data and the Legacy setup on a CD to send to family members.  When the recipient installs Legacy the family data, pictures, sounds and videos will also be installed automatically.

You can copy the LegacySetup.exe from our Legacy installation CD or you can download the full setup file from our web site and include this on the CD (please download the full setup file only).  After you download the full setup program you will need to rename it LegacySetup.exe when you burn it to the CD.

Note: If you inadvertently download/use the "Install from the Web" setup file, it will want to connect to the Internet when the user attempts to install Legacy from your CD.
Note: If you do not rename the full setup to
LegacySetup.exe, the user will be prompted for the installation password when attempting to install Legacy from your CD.

On the CD you compile, create any of the four folders shown below and place your family file, pictures, sounds and video files in them.  When the recipient installs Legacy the setup program will look to see if these four folders exist and if they do will copy the files in them to the users computer.

Be sure to use the software that comes with your CD burner to copy the Legacy setup program and create four folders called FamilyData, FamilyPictures, FamilySounds, FamilyVideos and (FamilyDocs starting with Legacy 7.0).   You only need to create the folders that will actually have data or media files in them.

Here's how the CD should look:

You would place a copy of your family file, for example McGinnis.fdb or whatever the name, into the FamilyData folder. All of you pictures would  be copied into the FamilyPictures folder and so forth.  Everyone you send a CD to would get copies.

All of the files in the FamilyData folder will be installed to the C:\Legacy\Data folder on the user's computer.  All of the FamilyPictures will be installed to the C:\Legacy\Pictures folder, and so forth.  You don't need all four folders -- only the ones you use.  If you don't have any video or sound files then you don't need to create these folders on the CD.

By using these folders it simplifies things for the recipients.  First they have the Legacy setup right on the CD; they don't have to order it from us; they don't have to download it.  Just install it and run: You have our permission to distribute the Legacy 6.0 Standard Edition in this manner.  The Install will automatically copy all of the family data to their computer.
You won't have to include instructions to them on how to copy the files from the CD to their computer!

The Legacy CD's you create make great gifts for birthdays and holidays or terrific handouts for family reunions!

Hint: You can make your CD's to automatically install Legacy by adding an autorun.inf file to your CD. Here's how the CD would look after adding the autorun.inf file to it:

Hint: Be sure to include your Legacy affiliate ID number on the CD. Click here for more information.
