LDS Ordinance Reports
Tips and Tricks
- Make sure that you have the latest update
installed to your Legacy program.
- Use the Search IGI feature in Legacy to
update ordinance information online from FamilySearch.org for individuals in
your family file just before you begin. This will find the most recent
ordinance data available and will help avoid duplicate temple work.
- Did you know that the FHC near you can get a free copy of Legacy to install on their computers? Click here for details.
Legacy initiates a step-by-step procedure for submission to TempleReady that allows you to easily and accurately track selected names. The selected names are first prepared in Legacy for TempleReady. Next they are cleared in TempleReady and made ready for the Temple. These steps involve:
1. Selection in Legacy of individuals and families for Temple ordinances. Then, exporting these “pre-qualified” records to special GEDCOM file to be used in TempleReady. This step also marks all the selected individuals and families in the family file with the word "Submitted" and the date in all qualifying ordinance date fields.
2. Processing in TempleReady these pre-qualified records. This step checks each individual against the ordinances listed in the Ordinance Index (IGI) to see what temple work has already been done.
3. When completed, TempleReady produces a Temple Submission File on a diskette that is then delivered to the Temple. In addition, TempleReady creates a report that lists which individuals have been cleared for qualifying ordinances; which individuals have already had ordinances completed; which individuals (like infants and small children) do not need work done; and which individuals do not qualify. This report is used to update the Legacy family file.
You may select an individual, a family, an ancestral line or every one in your family for submission. The following instructions will guide you.
When you click the Temple button on the tool bar and select Create TempleReady Submission File from the pull-down Temple menu, the Name List will then open with the Temple tab displayed on the right.
The Name List side displays columns labeled B, E, P, S, and C, meaning Baptism, Endowment, seal to Parents, seal to Spouse and seal Children.
Understanding the Plus Sign (+)
A plus sign (+) indicates that the particular ordinance does not need to be considered for submission. It either has already done, it has already been submitted or does not need to be done. For example, children who died before the age of eight years only need to be sealed to their parents. All other ordinances are unnecessary.
Understanding the Plus/Minus Sign (±)
The plus/minus sign (±) means that some, but not all, of the work has been done for that ordinance. For example, three of five children in a family may have been sealed to their parents, but the remaining two still need this ordinance. (In other screens, an upper case C means all children have been sealed to their parents, and a lower case c means some, but not all, children have been sealed to their parents. Likewise, an upper case S means that an individual has been sealed to all his/her spouses, and a lower case s means an individual has been sealed to at least one, but not all spouses.)
Understanding the Question Mark (?)
As you proceed with the selection of names, question marks (?) will appear when a person is not qualified and the reasons are shown in the Comments box in the lower-right corner. For example, question marks appear in the B and E columns and the Comments box displays “BE: Need date and place,” meaning the person is missing a date and place of birth and, therefore, cannot be submitted. More research is needed to fill in missing data so that the person can be qualified.
You can quickly view the LDS Ordinances for a person by highlighting him/her in the Name List and then clicking the LDS tab. When finished click the Temple tab to return.
How to Qualify a Person for TempleReady Submission
- Highlight the Individual you want to submit in the list on the left by clicking once on his/her name. Choose a person that has one or more blanks in the B, E, P, S, and C columns.
- Next, click the Submit button to submit the highlighted person for all qualifying ordinances (baptism, endowment, sealing to spouse, sealing to parents and sealing children to the individual). If you click the blue down-arrow button (next to the Submit button) you will have the options to submit the highlighted individual for specific ordinances:
·
Baptism and Endowment
· Seal to Highlighted Parent
· Seal to Highlighted Spouse
· Seal Children to Highlighted Spouse
· All Ordinances for Current Parents/Spouse/Children
· All Ordinances for All Parents/Spouses/ChildrenAs you click the Submit button or select an option from drop-down menu, B, E, P, S or C will show in the various columns when the person is qualified for each ordinance. Question marks (?) will appear when a person is not qualified and the reasons are shown in the Comments box in the lower-right corner. Persons with question marks (?) need more research to fill in missing data so that they can be qualified.
- Next click the TempleReady button. The TempleReady Submission window will appear. Before you create the file there are two options to consider:
a. Click the Submitter button to make sure that your correct name and address are entered so that other people can get a hold of you when doing research later.
b. You can select or clear the option to include the parents and spouses of the people you are submitting. These extra people will not have their ordinances submitted but will be included in the IGI file to make it more useful to other researchers in the future.
- Click the Select File Name and CREATE FILE button.
- Next, the Mark Submitted Records window will open. When you export names that you want to submit for temple work, you should mark them so you know who was sent and so that you don't submit them again in the future inadvertently. It is suggested that you place the word "Submitted" or "Sub", along with the current date, in all the ordinance date fields for each individual and marriage you export.
a. Select the Mark each ordinance date with: option if you want to mark the records being exported.
b. Make sure the word and date you want are in the text boxes. It is suggested that you use the word "Sub" along with the date you are doing the export.
c. Click Continue to proceed with the export.
- The Export to TempleReady File screen will now open. By default the A: drive is selected. Be certain you have a blank, formatted disk inserted in the drive. Next, give your TempleReady GEDCOM file a name and click the Save button.
- At this point a message box will ask if you would like to print a Submission Report before continuing. Print this report now as this will be the only chance you have.
- The Legacy program will then collect the submission information. As it does this, a progress bar will move until it reaches 100 percent.
- When done another message box will inform you that the export is complete and show you the total number of individuals and families included in the GEDCOM file. (For example, if a child is being sealed to parents who have already had all of their Temple ordinances done, the parents must be named in the file, even though no ordinances are being done for them. In addition, spouses may be included to provide additional identifying information, even though they are not being submitted. See step 4b.) For the actual count of individuals and families being submitted for their temple ordinance work, you must refer to the Submission Report created in step 8.
- Click the OK button and remove your diskette from the A: drive. It is now ready to be processed in TempleReady.
You can print out various LDS Ordinance Reports from the Name List when the Temple tab is selected by clicking the Print button at the bottom of the window.
